about

I was listening to “Rush of Blood to the Head” by Coldplay for the first time when I began writing the lyrics to this song. I held these lyrics for about 5 years before I got the music and then another 3 or 4 years before the final arrangement was made (thank you David Reid and Seth Buchanan). I was reading a book by John Eldridge entitled “Waking the Dead’ and he was quoting from the book "The Perfect Storm" how emergency medical teams code a victim's level of consciousness. When an emergency medical team comes upon someone they want to find out how bad the victim’s condition is. By running a series of tests they describe the person at best being “alert and oriented times 4” and at worst being “Alert and Oriented times zero”. If someone is alert and oriented times zero "their understanding of the world is reduced to the fact that they exist, nothing more...." Eldridge makes the point that sometimes it seems we live our lives this way...just existing and nothing more. However, “…the glory of God is man fully alive” and we need to wake up and start really living.

lyrics

Four walls closing in
Two walls religion, two walls sin
Victims and villains one and all
Stuck in the box of Adam's fall.

Un-suffocate let me out
I'm choking on fumes of fear and doubt
Where is the path to leave this mess?
Can I do more than just exist...just exist?

I am hoisting up my sails
its time to leave this place
I fill my heart with hope again
Its time to turn the page
A light has broken through the dark
this is what I believe
In the middle of this box
A hero lived and breathed...and died for me.

There's more to life than meets the eye
More than me, myself and I
Someone's knocking at the door
I open to find so much more...there's so much more.

I am hoisting up my sails
its time to leave this place
I fill my heart with hope again
Its time to turn the page
A light has broken through the dark
this is what I believe
In the middle of this box
A hero lived and breathed...and died for me.

It's time to break free and live my dream
and give out the love that was giving to me
It's time to live by faith so I can see
It's time to break free and live my dream
and give out the love that was giving to me
It's time to live by faith so I can see
and give out the love that was giving to me

I am hoisting up my sails
its time to leave this place
I fill my heart with hope again
Its time to turn the page
A light has broken through the dark
this is what I believe
In the middle of this box
A hero lived and breathed...and died for me.
